The Problem
After 15 years, the software platform powering SAT registration, score reporting, and sending scores to colleges was in need of a ground-up rebuild. The work took the form of a multi-year project, chipping away at legacy architecture to rebuild a modern, dynamic, cloud-based system of data and frontend services. I managed the design team entrusted with the work and got hands-on in some of the UI design and technical sprints.
The Process
The extent of the project led us to adapt our most integrated agile process yet at College Board. We kicked off by traveling to our technology hub in Reston, VA for a series of design sprints to establish requirements. A dedicated cross-functional team was then taken off all their other work and given their own workspace to work face-to-face for months, collaborating on all aspects of requirements gathering, research, design, and user testing.

The Product
The new apps released in a rolling cadence over 2020 and 2021, beginning with the Score Sends experience and continuing through the full Registration flow. The new designs cut registration time in half, make it easier for lower-income students to find and use fee waivers, optimize for mobile devices, and expand functionality for students looking for free test prep or to send their scores to more schools.
